Position Summary:

The Programmer/Metroligist will be responsible for managing and executing all aspects of metrology, reverse engineering and dimensional inspection within a high-precision medical manufacturing environment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and compliance of plastic injection molds and components, stamping dies and components, fixtures, and precision gages used in the production of medical devices and components.

Responsibilities

CMM Programming & Operations

  • Develop, edit, and optimize CMM programs using CALYPSO (or applicable software) to perform dimensional inspection of components, tooling, and gages.
  • Execute and verify CMM inspection routines for first article, in-process, and final inspections.

Dimensional Inspection & Measurement

  • Perform detailed dimensional analysis of plastic injection molds, stamping dies, fixtures, and precision gages using CMMs, vision systems, height gages, micrometers, calipers, and other metrology tools.
  • Interpret and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to assess part conformity to engineering drawings and 3D CAD models.

Calibration & Equipment Management

  • Responsible for calibration of all measurement and inspection equipment in accordance with ISO 13485 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Maintain calibration records, certificates, and ensure traceability to NIST or other recognized standards.
  • Perform basic maintenance of inspection equipment.
  • Maintain an organized work area (5S).

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze measurement data to determine process capability and compliance with specifications.
  • Generate and maintain detailed inspection reports, capability studies (Cp, Cpk), and statistical analysis as required.

Quality Systems Compliance

  • Ensure all metrology and inspection activities align with internal quality standards and external regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485).
  • Participate in internal and external audits, providing documentation and technical support as needed.

Tooling and Product Validation Support

  • Support validation and qualification of molds, dies, and fixtures through comprehensive measurement and inspection.
  • Work with engineering and quality teams during PPAP, IQ/OQ/PQ, and product launch phases.
  • Devise fixture concepts and participate in gage and fixture development.

Technical Leadership & Training

  • Provide guidance and technical support to inspection and quality personnel on measurement techniques and equipment usage.
  • Train team members in CMM operation, GD&T interpretation, and inspection protocols.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for process and measurement improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action efforts related to dimensional nonconformance or inspection issues.
  • Identify and implement inspection methods and equipment to reduce cost and improve productivity.
  • Participate in the Operational Excellence Program.

Documentation & Procedure Development

  • Create and maintain work instructions, calibration procedures, and inspection protocols.
  • Ensure all documentation is up to date and reflects current practices and standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with design engineering, quality, manufacturing, and tooling departments to resolve technical challenges and improve product quality.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Metrology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is perferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., ASQ Certified Calibration Technician, GD&T Certification, or Calypso training) are a plus.
  • 4+ years of experience in dimensional metrology, precision inspection, and CMM programming within a regulated manufacturing environment (preferably medical devices, aerospace, DOD or automotive).
  • Proven hands-on experience programming and operating CMMs, especially using CALYPSO or equivalent software is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and its application in inspection and analysis.
  • Proven experience inspecting plastic injection molds, stamping dies, tooling/fixtures, and precision gages.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA QSR, and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Experience with a broad range of measurement tools and systems, including vision systems, laser scanners, and traditional hand tools.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and 3D CAD models.
  • Solid understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and capability studies (Cp, Cpk).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation practices, and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to train and mentor inspection staff, machine specialists and Toolmakers and communicate technical requirements clearly.

Pay Range

USD $29.23 - USD $40.00 /Hr.

20+hours:
